Melo Loses Again

During Thursday’s Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards, New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony, attempted to set a Guinness World Record with the most high-fives in 30 seconds. Predictably, Melo wasn’t able to come through after pausing with seven seconds left, costing him the record as he fell just 10 high-fives short. Close but no cigar, a feeling Anthony knows all too well.

Ever since Melo was drafted number three overall by the Denver Nuggets in 2003, he’s had victory in his grasp, only to have butterfingers and have it slip away. Denver made the postseason during each his first five seasons, but lost in the first round. Melo even had the help of former league MVP Allen Iverson for two playoff runs, and still managed to start his vacation in early May.

In 2009, Denver realized that their duo of Iverson and Anthony was not the answer and shipped Iverson to Detroit for veteran point guard, Chauncey Billups. Melo got closer than he's ever been to winning by advancing to the Western Conference Finals. However, his team lost to the eventual champions, the Los Angeles Lakers.

After another season and another first round exit with the Nuggets, Melo forced a midseason trade out of Denver to his hometown New York Knicks. Unfortunately for Melo, a change of scenery didn’t change the end result, as New York lost in the first round in 2011 and 2012. The 2013 Knicks finished with 54 wins in the Eastern Conference, but failed to meet expectations as they were sent fishing in the second round.

Melo’s Nickelodeon performance is even more indicative of how things have been going lately at his day job. The Knicks have had consecutive losing seasons without playoff appearances. New York tanked the 2014 – 15 season away, ending up with the second worst record in the league, only to fall out of the top three in the lottery. Melo doesn’t even win in NBA pong.

New York drafted Kristaps Porzingis, a player who many experts believe is not NBA ready. Sprinkle in the Knicks consistently failing to entice superstar free agents to come play in New York, and Melo’s win-now prospects become even dimmer.

With everything that's occurred throughout his career, one can only ponder the question; will Carmelo Anthony ever win…anything?
