Recap
The Memphis Grizzlies survived the 2015-16 NBA season and by the grace of the basketball gods, the state of Tennessee saw playoff basketball. However, it came at the expense of a sweep, thanks to the San Antonio Spurs and injuries were a defining factor regarding the end result. With Marc Gasol and Mike Conley sidelined, head coach Dave Joerger had to rely on a injured Tony Allen and whatever Vince Carter had left in the tank. Despite their struggles, the Grizzlies have assets and cap space heading into this offseason.
Free Agents
Restricted – Bryce Cotton
Options – Vince Carter, JaMychal Green, Xavier Munford
Unrestricted – P.J. Hairston, Lance Stephenson, Chris Andersen, Matt Barnes, Jordan Farmar
Who Leaves, Who Stays
According to si.com, Mike Conley has agreed to remain with the Grizzlies for at least half of Memphis. Lance Stephenson’s team option was declined so look for the former bearcat to change area codes. P.J. Hairston might also follow Stephenson out the door. Barnes played well during the playoffs so expect the Grizzlies to show their appreciation. The Grizz will need a backup to give Conley a breather and Farmar is a nice steady option. Chris Andersen could be back as the third string big off the bench.
Needs
With father time knocking on Vince’s door and the likely-hood of Barnes starting, a starting three and two wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Welcome Chandler Parsons. Next, the Grizz should look for Marc Gasol insurance so look for management to targets some of the better bigs available on the market.
Possible Moves
Eric Gordon – injury prone but can fill it up with the best of them when healthy
JR Smith – The streaky shooter has dodged problems all the way to an NBA championship
Ryan Anderson – Slept on but a great shooter who can score with length
Marvin Williams – Solid stretch four
