Here at Off the Glass we’re taking on the arduous task of going through every NBA teams’ greatest possible starting five, using players that have played for that franchise. A player at each position (Point Guard through Center) will be selected, along with a 6th man who can be any position.
This is how it works:
Players selected must have played at least two full seasons for the franchise
The selection will be based on a combination of statistics, accomplishments/accolades and their significance to the franchise in question
Players had to have predominantly played at that particular position for at least one season to be eligible
Let’s get started.
Memphis Grizzlies
Point Guard- Mike Conley: The Grizzlies aren’t known for having great point guards, but Mike Conley is so unique and so gifted, he makes a serious case for the best point guard in franchise history. Conley is part of the reason the Grizzlies have been on the map for the past couple of years. His ability to defend, finish on the fast break, and get his teammates involved is what makes the Grizz so fun to watch.
Shooting Guard- Mike Miller: This was an easy selection for me. Leave Miller open from 3, it's almost automatic. Miller is one of the best shooters of all-time, and he proved to be a very clutch player as well (ask the Spurs or Thunder.)
Small Forward- Shane Battier: One of the best defenders of all-time and also a tremendous role player. Battier was present for four playoff appearances with the Grizz, and let's not forget the shot he made against the Spurs. What I loved most about Battier was his ability to guard the best player on the opposing team.
Power Forward- Zach Randolph: Z-BO is what die-hard fans call Zach Randolph around town. This was a really tough choice because I wanted to put Pau here, but I believe Pau plays better as a center than a PF. Z-BO is a prolific mid-range shooter and one of the most physical players under the rim. He’s not afraid to throw his body around, and that’s what I love most about him.
Center- Pau Gasol: My main man!! Look Pau is one of those rare players you could put at the 4 or 5 and he’d still make an impact on the floor. Him and his brother, Marc, have the same style of play and that’s why this position is literally a coin toss between the two. But I give Pau the edge, not only because he’s a champion now, but also the impact he has had on the Spanish Basketball community.
6th Man- OJ Mayo: What a career Mayo had at Memphis. When he came into the game, he brought energy and most importantly scoring. Mayo can really score the ball when in rhythm. Most importantly, Memphis isn’t know for having great bench players, and it makes sense for Mayo to be their best 6th man.
