Several NBA players publicly reacted to the violence perpetrated by white nationalists during the rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Three-time NBA Champion Lebron James tweeted, “it’s sad what’s going on in Charlottesville. Is this the direction our country is heading? Make America Great Again huh?! He said that.” James later followed up his first tweet by posting a second message, “our youth deserves better!! Flat out.” Days later, James called out the president for emboldening racism in America, “hate has always existed in America. Yes we know that but Donald Trump just made it fashionable again! Status have nothing to do with us now!”
Two-time MVP point guard Steve Nash also took aim at Donald Trump’s response to the hate-filled demonstration, posting “to defend white supremacists and then slang his s****y a** grape juice pretty much sums the man up,” on his Twitter page and Brooklyn Nets point guard Jeremy Lin posted his disgust at the demonstration in Emancipation Park, tweeting “#Charlottesville makes me sick…what world are we living in rn [right now]?!?”
It may be the off-season but shots are already being taken off the court as athletes around the league weigh in on the displays of Nazism and bigotry that claimed the lives of 32-year-old counter protester Heather Heyer and Virginia State Troopers Lt. Cullen (left) and Trooper Pilot Bates (right).
