Trade Deadline Marathon: Day 6.5

Evan Dyal

Detroit Pistons receive- Jeremy Lin, Dewayne Dedmon, Charlotte's 2019 second round pick

Atlanta Hawks receive- Jon Leuer, Ish Smith, Stanley Johnson, Detroit 2019 first round pick (protected picks 1-14)

Why the Pistons Would do it - Detroit is desperate, as the team is rapidly falling out of the playoff race in the East. The team needs, depth, play-making, and shooting. This trade is a step in the right direction for the Pistons.

Lin would be an immediate upgrade at backup point guard for Detroit. In fact, he may even be better than Reggie Jackson, and the two could share a back-court at times as well. Dewayne Dedmon would be a great reserve center behind Andre Drummond. This trade should be enough to bolster the Pistons roster and cement their status as a playoff team.

Why the Hawks Would do it- Lin and Dedmon have both played well this year, but they don’t fit Atlanta’s timeline. This trade helps the Hawks turn veteran players into future assets. Leuer doesn’t help much, but he is mainly used to match salary.

In Ish Smith, Atlanta gets an expiring contract, who in the meantime can back up Trae Young. The Hawks also receive Stanley Johnson, who is running out of time in Detroit, but the Hawks could try to revitalize his career. If Johnson doesn’t workout they can let him walk in the off-season. Also in the trade the Hawks get a protected first round pick, which is always valuable.
