What’s the deal?

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the Brooklyn Nets and DeAndre Jordan have agreed to a 4 year, $40 million deal.

What does DeAndre Jordan bring to the Nets?

Jordan is the third big signing the Nets completed on Sunday afternoon, with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant being the first two. This will be Jordan’s 12th season in the NBA and his fourth team. Throughout his career, Jordan has been an elite rebounder and has been effective at scoring at the rim, leading the NBA in FG% five times in his career.

It will be interesting to see how the Nets use Jordan, as he’s never really had an outside shot, and they have a very similar player to him in Jarrett Allen already on the roster. Some think having Jordan around Allen will help the young center, and that Jordan can be a good mentor to help Allen reach his ceiling.

Jordan is also a good friend of Kevin Durant, and it’s been said that the two not only wanted to team up, but Durant and Irving both took pay cuts in order for DeAndre to sign.

What does this mean for Brooklyn?

It’s unknown how Jordan will fit into Atkinson’s system, whether or not he will start and how much playing time he will receive. What is known is that he is a dominating force inside the paint who can be a mentor for the young Jarrett Allen.

How would you grade this contract?

This is a tricky one to grade, as it feels like Jordan was overpaid for what he purely brings on the court, plus the deal takes him into his age 34 season. However, if the key to bringing in Durant and Irving was signing Jordan, this deal had to be done. Overall the move gets a B, but if it were purely for basketball purposes it would be in the C range.

Final thoughts

Jordan provides a veteran presence inside, similar to the role Ed Davis played last season. This is an interesting fit in Atkinson’s system, and it’s yet to be seen how he will work with Allen. Overall, Nets fans should be happy with what Marks was able to accomplish on July 1st.
