After a very promising rookie campaign with the Toronto Raptors, O.G. Anunoby’s second season left a lot to be desired. Kawhi Leonard did bump Anunoby in the depth chart, which certainly didn’t help. His sophomore slump was understandable.
In 67 games, O.G. shot 45.3 percent from the field including 33.2 percent from three on 3.0 attempts per game. He averaged 7.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 0.7 steals in 20.2 minutes per game.
Born in London and raised in Missouri, Anunoby had a very efficient postseason despite limited minutes. He shot 55.8 percent from the field and 44.8 percent from downtown on 2.9 attempts per game.
Although Anunoby didn’t make a leap in year two, he certainly didn’t regress. At just 21-years old, he was contributing role player on a championship team as the Raptors won their first title in franchise history. Not bad.
Leonard, of course, left Toronto in the rearview. The Raptors have since brought in the likes of Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Stanley Johnson on the wing. Anunoby has competition, but should have a shot at earning serious playing time.
In year three, O.G. will have a solid opportunity to develop and take the next step of establishing himself in the league. The Raptors could form a solid young duo with Pascal Siakam.
Defensively, expect Anunoby to improve. He has a real knack for it. Offensive growth will be more pertinent. His shooting numbers haven’t been horrible, save from the free throw line (see: 60.5 percent on 124 career attempts).
Anunoby has a lot of tools in his tool box and though he’s been very raw, he has a lot of athleticism and a clear path forward. Defensively, head coach Nick Nurse can feel confident sticking him with an opponent’s top player.
Anunoby’s offensive game ultimately defines his potential. But a player that can guard almost any position on the floor is a rare commodity. Raptors fans should feel tepidly optimistic about O.G.
2019-2020 Stat line Predictions:
14.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals on shooting splits of 47/35/67 (FG%/3PT%/FT%).
