Clippers get: Tristan Thompson Cavaliers get: Mo Harkless, Ivica Zubac
Why would the Clippers do it?
As we know, the L.A. Clippers are one of the best teams in the league and after acquiring not one but two superstars in the offseason, they are championship contenders. As good of a young piece as Ivica Zubac is, Tristan Thompson would help them a whole lot more right now in their title run. He’s also only 28 years old and knowing that he would be starting for a contender would make him at least strongly consider re-signing in free agency. So, this would help the Clippers in the short term and possibly long term as well.
Why would the Cavaliers do it?
Darius Garland and Collin Sexton are the backcourt that Cleveland has chosen for their future and let’s just say they’re lacking, to put it politely, on the defensive end. Mo Harkless is a more than serviceable 3-and-D forward that could help them on that end. If they don’t like the fit, he’s an expiring contract.
Bringing in Ivica Zubac, the Cavs would have their center of the future and this would be a solid move for them. He’s locked up on a more than reasonable contract until 2023 free agency, is only 22 years old and would be a force in the middle for the youth movement. He’s averaging 16.8 points, 14.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per 36 minutes this season. On a young team with more opportunity, he could start feasting.
That’s quite the haul for Cleveland for a player who is really good, but is more than likely bound to leave this coming summer. L.A. might be willing to pull the trigger knowing it helps them in their title pursuit.
