OTG's Trade Deadline Marathon: D’Angelo Russell Goes Back East

Charles Allen

GSW receives: Tobias Harris, Atlanta's 202 second-round pick, New York's 2021 secound-round pick

PHI receives: D'Angelo Russell, Kevon Looney, Alec Burks

Why the Warriors do it: With the season essentially over for the Golden State Warriors, it's time to start looking towards next season. Russell was never really thought of to be a part of the Warriors' future, so it only makes sense for them to try to move him. In return, they land Tobias Harris, a 6'8 wing who excels at being the third option.

No longer would the Warriors have to think about tinkering with a three-guard lineup once everyone is healthy. Harris would immediately slot in as a starting forward, and at 27 years-old, he would be able to extend the Warriors playoff hopes for a few more seasons. He hovers around 18 points and seven rebounds a night, and surely would be able to flourish in a system with two of the league's best shooters.

Also in the deal are two second-round picks. The Warriors are light on picks in the upcoming years and both of these, one from Atlanta and one from New York, project to be early in the second round. The Warriors have been fairly efficient picking late in the first round and in the second round, so these hold more value that just throw-in's.

Why the 76ers do it: The fit in Philadelphia has been less than ideal. While many will try to pry away the Simmons/Embiid duo, this gives the organization one more go at it before blowing everything up. Simmons and Russell might technically play the point guard position, but both play it very differently.

Russell's ability to shoot and create his own shot, something Simmons has been criticized for, would pair well next to Simmons' play-making and defensive abilities, something Russell has been criticized for. Russell is also only 23 years-old, putting him in the early stages of his prime right alongside Simmons (23 years-old) and Embiid (25 years-old).

This trade would give the 76ers a more dynamic threesome and allow them to toy around with rotations. Russell has been great from three, which is an area of need for the 76ers. They would also add a young center in Looney, who could backup Embiid, when he needs to sit.
