IND receives: Davis Bertans WAS receives: Doug McDermott, 2022 1st round pick

Why does Indiana do it?

The Pacers, with Victor Oladipo healthy, are title contenders. They are stacked on the wings and Doug McDermott is expendable. Their starting frontcourt is solid with Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner but their big man depth could definitely use an upgrade from T.J. Leaf and Goga Bitadze.

By adding Davis Bertans, they make their frontcourt and bench so much deeper. His ability to shoot the three and spread the floor and will be an extremely useful asset when the playoffs start.

Bertans is shooting 42.2% from deep this season, making 3.6 triples nightly, and averaging 15 points, 4.6 rebounds and 0.7 blocks per game. What team couldn’t use that off the bench? Indy would be smart to pull the trigger if D.C. agrees to this deal.

Why does Washington do it?

Yes, Bertans has been really good this season, but he will be a free agent this summer and the Wizards likely stand a better chance of losing him than keeping him. So, they would be wise to get something in return while they can.

The Wizards would come close to replacing his shooting with Doug McDermott. Doug is shooting 46.1% from downtown, making 2.0 threes per match and averaging 10.4 points per game. Although he isn’t making as many treys or scoring as many points, he’s actually hitting at a higher clip from deep.

That’s for a much better team so you would have to think with a move to the Wizards, his stats could go up. In his last ten games, he’s shooting 51.9% from the arc, making 2.7 triples and averaging 14.6 points per game.

Washington would also get a first-round pick in return. That’s quite the offer for someone that might leave for nothing in free agency.
