OTG's Trade Deadline Marathon: The Celtics Steal a Sneaky Bench Scorer

Matt Esposito

BOS receives: SG Malik Beasley

DEN receives: C Vincent Poirier, G Javonte Green and Milwaukee's 2020 First Round Pick

Why the Celtics would do it: Despite coming off a breakout season in which he shot 47 percent from the floor and 40 percent from deep, Malik Beasley has registered some perplexing DNP - Coach's Decisions this season. That being said, he is still a talented scorer. After sitting out two of his previous five games, Beasley filled in for an injured Jamal Murray and casually dropped 27 points while going 5-10 from beyond the arc.

The Celtics desperately need bench scoring. Specifically, they need someone who can come in and space the floor in the second unit. A restricted free agent after this season, Beasley could potentially become a half year rental. But shipping out what will likely be the 30th pick in a weak draft could be worth it. His lack of playing time has flummoxed those around the NBA but Beasley can still hoop. The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor has recently reported that many teams are still high on Beasley and monitoring his availability.

Why the Nuggets would do it: Coach Mike Malone has recently commented that Beasley could be looking at more playing time. Yet, he has not been shy about benching him for full games. This suggests Beasley may not be part of the Nugget's long term plans. What's more, Beasley turned down a $30 million contract extension from Denver this offseason as he believes he could get more after this season is complete.

There is a snag, however. Murray, Paul Millsap, and Gary Harris are all out with injury and the timetables for Murray and Millsap are unclear. But if the Nuggets can get some players back before the trade deadline then they could afford to deal Beasley. Vincent Poirier is a cap filler but Javonte Green can actually play NBA minutes. The late first could make this deal palatable for Denver as they may not want to let Beasley simply walk away at seasons end for nothing in return. Additionally, I am not sure how much more they could get in an offer.
