Trade Deadline Marathon: Miami loads up on the wing

Writer's picture: Alec LiebschAlec Liebsch

Miami Heat receive: F Otto Porter Jr.

Chicago Bulls receive: F Andre Iguodala, C Meyers Leonard, 2022 2nd round pick (less favorable of Denver or Philadelphia)

Why the Heat would do it:

The Miami Heat have always been buyers, and a season impacted by COVID expects to be no different. The reigning champs of the East have a crown to defend. Porter is a good wing that can definitely help a contender, and Miami is one of the few teams that can match his salary without losing an arm and a leg.

The 27 year-old is ready-made for playoff basketball. A career 40.4% 3-point shooter with a history of quality defense and even some shot creation, Porter fits right into Miami's rotation at a position that everyone needs.

Why the Bulls would do it:

Porter isn't a vital part of the Bulls' rotation right now. Patrick Williams is going to get as much run as he can handle, for better or worse. There's plenty of reason to trade Porter and get something useful for him--even if that something is a late second rounder.

The market for Porter should be bigger than this. He's a positive contributor at a position everyone covets. But the variance of this season, the expanded playoff format (two-thirds of the league will participate), and his $28.5 million cap hit will make it difficult for teams to pull off any earth-shattering moves.
